The State of Managed Care – Headed for Disaster

“Managed Care in many ways is like heroin. At first it feels good, (instant patient base, instant cash for a new physician looking to pay off student loans) but once you get hooked it seems impossible to let go. It is like you are addicted, you know you should stop, you know it is killing you but you are stuck. I am working twice as hard as 10–15 years ago and making half as much.”

— Dr. Rogina – OBGYN

Financial Dependence

A majority of health professionals are dependent on managed care as the primary source of revenue for their practice. Managed care, to most healthcare professionals, means:

  • Less patient interaction and therefore decreased quality of care
  • Capitation and shrinking reimbursements
  • increased administrative headaches
  • additional overhead and expenses
  • increased competition from hospitals and publicly-traded firms, and
  • the ever present risk of malpractice liability

Unfortunately, the situation isn’t likely to improve in the near future. Industry experts and government studies expect it to get even worse.

Fortunately, you have other options to earn a respectable living and enjoy a quality of life that your years of training and hard work deserve.
